چکیده

In delay tolerant networks, custody transfer can provide certain degree of reliability as a custodian node cannot discard a message unless its life time expires or the custody is transferred to another node after a commitment. This creates a challenging decision making problem at a node in determining whether to accept a custody transfer: on one hand, it is beneficial to accept a large number of messages as it can potentially advance the messages toward their ultimate destinations and network utilization can be maximized; on the other hand, if the receiving node overcommits itself by accepting too many messages, it may find itself setting aside an excessive amount of storage and thereby preventing itself from receiving further potentially important, high yield (in terms of network utilization) messages. To solve this problem, in this paper, we apply the concept of revenue management, and employ dynamic programming to develop a congestion management strategy for delay tolerant networks. For a class of network utility functions, we show that the optimal solution is completely distributed in nature where only the local information such as available storage space of a node is required. This is particularly important given the nature of delay tolerant networks where global information is often not available and the network is inherently dynamic. Our simulation results show that the proposed congestion management scheme is effective in avoiding congestion and balancing network load among the nodes.

Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Networks

—There are problems of low delivery radio and high transmission delay in Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Networks (a.b. VDTN. To address these problems, this paper proposes a Vehicular Delay-tolerant Network routing algorithm based on Contention (a.b. VDNC). VDTN algorithm consists of three strategies: the intersection selection strategy based on the Manhattan distance and traffic information, the fi...

Where the Network ends: Infrastructure and Delay Tolerant Networks in a Hybrid Future Internet

Traffic carried by mobile networks doubles per year, resulting in congestion and high cost for network upgrades. With the widespread integration of sensing devices with the Internet—in the so-called “Internet of Things”—infrastructurebased networks are becoming an increasingly expensive way of keeping up with communication needs due to the high volume of sensing data. Delay Tolerant Networks pr...

A survey on congestion control for delay and disruption tolerant networks

Delay and disruption tolerant networks (DTNs) may experience frequent and long-lived connectivity disruptions. Unlike traditional networks, such as the TCP/IP-based Internet, DTNs are often subject to high latency caused by very long propagation delays (e.g., interplanetary communication) and/or intermittent connectivity. Another feature that sets DTNs apart from conventional networks is that t...

Congestion Control Approaches Applied to Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a specific category of wireless ad-hoc networks where their performance is highly affected by application, life time, storage capacity, processing power, topology changes, the communication medium and bandwidth. These limitations necessitate an effective data transport control in WSNs considering quality of service, energy efficiency, and congestion control. ...
